(Source: Healthline, How Do I Pull Out My Child’s Baby Tooth, and Can I Also Pull My Own?, by Tim Jewell, medically reviewed by Christine Frank, DDS, September 13, 2018, https://www.healthline.com/health/how-to-pull-out-a-tooth ).
How to pull a childs loose tooth?
Tim Jewell advises that typically, baby teeth will shed on their own without requiring any intervention. It’s advisable not to pull them out prematurely since they play a vital role in guiding the emergence of adult teeth and supporting the development of facial structures like the jaw.
Simcoe Kids Dental advises, “Tim suggests three methods for pulling out a childs loose tooth in a “fun” way. These include using a string and doorknob, tying a string to a dog’s collar while throwing a treat, and using a baseball to hit the tooth out. However, it is worth noting that these methods can be dangerous and potentially cause harm. It is recommended to have a dentist extract teeth.”
Tips on caring for kids teeth
Tim Jewell emphasizes that if your baby’s tooth is decaying, it’s essential to consult a children’s dentist. Not caring for kids teeth can cause bacteria or plaque to spread. Primary molars, located towards the back of the mouth, are frequently removed due to their challenging accessibility with a toothbrush and greater surface area.
Simcoe Kids Dental elaborates, “Caring for kids teeth is crucial to maintain their dental health and prevent dental problems like cavities and gum disease. Some tips that will help are starting early, using the right toothbrush, and practicing good oral hygiene.
Fluoride helps prevent tooth decay, but too much of it can lead to dental fluorosis. Ensure your child is receiving the right amount of fluoride by using fluoride toothpaste and consulting with your dentist. You should also limit sugary foods and drinks. Sugary, starchy foods and beverages can lead to tooth decay. Limiting sugary treats and drinks and encouraging water and milk instead help a lot.”
What is the right way to remove an adult tooth?
Tim Jewell asserts that removing adult teeth is not the same as pulling a childs loose tooth!
Simcoe Kids Dental agrees, “It’s recommended to have a dentist extract adult teeth, as they are deeply rooted and surrounded by gums, nerves, and blood vessels. Reasons for extraction include wisdom teeth removal, extensive decay or infection, and crowding. Attempting to extract teeth yourself can cause permanent damage, infection, and other complications. Home remedies such as biting into an apple, wiggling with fingers, and pulling with floss can also lead to serious dental problems.”
Tim Jewell summarises that as kids grow up, they eventually shed their baby teeth. Children’s dentist share that this process usually begins when a child reaches 6 or 7 years of age. Typically, it is noted that the lower central incisors are the first ones to fall out.
Simcoe Kids Dental adds, “However, adult teeth are meant to last a lifetime, and a loose adult tooth can become a significant concern. It’s not advisable to attempt to extract an adult tooth by yourself. Instead, it’s crucial to seek prompt dental care to prevent potential complications and health issues that may arise from tooth problems or improper extraction.”
