About Children’s Sleep Dentistry
In our ongoing efforts to make every dentist’s visit and every dental procedure a good one, we offer state-of-the-art children’s sleep dentistry services for young kids, youth, and teens at our Simcoe Kids Dental clinic.
When done in the dentist’s chair, some procedures may need more than one visit. This can be stressful or even traumatic for some children, which is exactly what we, and you, don’t want. When this may be the case, or if the procedure involves lots of noisy tools or uncomfortable positioning, we may decide, together, that full sleep dentistry, using general anesthesia, is the best possible solution and in your child’s best interest.
Our pediatric dentist Dr. Noah Turk, along with his specialist team and in-house anesthesiologist, have perfected their teamwork to administer the correct levels of sedation, monitor your child’s vitals throughout, and complete the required dental procedure with maximum efficiency and excellence.
THE FACTS
WHAT IS SLEEP DENTISTRY?
Sleep dentistry is, essentially, the same as general anaesthesia, but for dental procedure purposes. It is most commonly used in pediatric dentistry to ensure a comfortable, stress-free experience. Full sleep dentistry makes use of intravenous (IV) medications in order for your child to sleep for the entirety of the dental procedure. Our dedicated, highly specialized pediatric dental staff carefully monitor your child’s vitals (blood oxygen level, blood pressure, temperature, and heart rate) throughout, and post-op up until full recovery. Keeping your child asleep for more arduous procedures also ensures that they are calm, relaxed, comfortable, and left with no traumatic memories of the experience.
IS SLEEP DENTISTRY SAFE?
Yes. When performed by experienced, specialized pediatric dentists, with a highly trained medical anesthesiologist as part of the team, full sedation dentistry is safe for kids. To further put your mind at ease, and ensure that they are candidates for safe sleep dentistry, we always perform a full review of your child’s medical history, current medications, allergies, and any other concerns prior to scheduling any sleep dental surgery.
WHEN IS SLEEP DENTISTRY RECOMMENDED?
We usually recommend sleep dentistry if your child:
-
- Requires complex, multiple, or lengthy procedures;
- Has significant anxiety about the surgery specifically or visiting the dentist generally;
- Is very young;
- Has special needs or finds it difficult to sit still;
- Has a strong gag reflex.
WHAT DOES SLEEP DENTISTRY LOOK LIKE?
Our professional pediatric dental team, led by Dr. Noah, will talk you through your child’s sleep dentistry procedure from beginning to end. From initial consultation to medical history check, to pre-op routine, to day-of recommendations, to post-op symptoms and care, we leave no stone unturned, no question unanswered to ensure your child’s sleep dental surgery goes well, and that both you and your child are calm and relaxed throughout.
